Just heard the news of the passing of Shane MacGowan who was one of Ireland's finest poets and songwriters. The above is a tribute by Liam Clancy and it was loaded by Anna Rodgers way back in 2008 and with thanks. Shane was born on Christmas Day 1957 and died today Thursday the 30th of November 2023. There have been many fine Irish poets and performers but only a few great ones. The above. The poem is followed by Ewan MacColl's great ballad 'The Travelling People' though I've seen Peggy Seeger credited here also. Just about everyone has recorded this song but most people around these parts will remember 'The Johnstons' version, which was very popular in the sixties and good it was too. They were from Slane in County Meath. Happy Sunday morning!

I was given a copy of "The Yellow Bittern" yesterday by a former member of The Meath Writers' Circle who described it as a brilliant translation from the Gaelic by Thomas Mac Donagh who was a teacher in Cloughjordan, Co Tipperary and one of the signatories of the 1916 Proclamation. He also informed me that it is now banned from our school text books for health and safety reasons! And they all with smart phones!!! I might get back to "The Yellow Bittern" later but I'll let Liam give you his intro to the poem. No better man. There are other songs here as well. With thanks to T G Ciarán who loaded and youtube.
