Billy Joel - Q&A: Tell Us About "We Didn't Start The Fire"? (Oxford 1994)

American singer-songwriters have taken the contemporary or traditional ballad to a whole new level (or art form) and it's hard to understand why more of them didn't receive the Nobel prize for doing so and I know we've got a few of our own! The trouble with free verse or modern poetry is not just that nobody will buy it, nobody will remember it no matter how well crafted and in one hundred years from now most of it will be forgotten. The above history lesson will remain and people will reference it, simple as that. Came across a breakdown of the above and will load. Put the above on in any pub or nightclub turn the sound up and watch. Loaded by Billy Joel and with thanks.

Something for Valentine's Day 2023!

A House of Cards

Easy pieces.
All crumpled
Where we played,
Beginner's luck
We'd traded on
Them folding
Into place.
And hand in hand
The gospel was
The symmetry
Of pairs.
We cut along
The avenues
Down pyramid
And square.
And played a lot
Of patience then
The cards laid
Out so neat.
Coins and cups
And wands and words
Like gypsies in the street.
Our swords turned
Into ploughshares and
Then ploughshares
Into spades.
We came within
An ace of it,
It all stacked up
So well.
A knave on
Every corner.
Then story after
Story fell.

Frank Murphy.

The Meath Writers' Circle/ February Meeting 2023 (2)

The Meath Writers' Circle/February Meeting 2023 (2)

Last Thursday night's meeting of the group was something of a round-up with regard to past events and meetings and magazine sales. For a decade now we've managed to bring out books and magazines every year but sadly due to present circumstances this will no longer be possible as our best sales people are no longer with us due to illness or other difficulties and many have passed on. The Covid years were especially a problem as there were no meetings for about two years though we managed to hang on. Also as much of the selling of the magazine was done person to person the cashless era has done us no favours. The group though carries on and the next meeting is on Thursday the 7th of March in Navan Library. Hope to see you there.
