"Leaving Galway" James Linnane.

This is the fourth book to date by James Linnane and his first book of short stories. Other books were titled, "Never take an Irishman seriously unless he's armed, The Life and Times of a Gotcha, and The Potless Generation" which was a book of poetry. What they all have in common is their irreverence and humour and often downright honesty whatever the situation and he will take you to places often you'd rather not go. And sometimes places you wish you could. No account of life in Dublin of the eighties would be complete without some reference to McDaids and he was there when anyone who was just about anyone graced its doors. His stories of Boston or New York or of growing up in Meath or Galway make for easy reading and his writing of the West Coast around San Diego is as good as it gets. This is a collection of poems that touches on everything from the passing of time to the political mess we find ourselves in and often with a savage twist or sting in the tail. There is some lovely humour and then performance pieces like "Head for the Door" and "The Starkness of Silence" have a standard that should keep them around for a long time. If I had to pick a poem though on a once through "Cold Days Are Coming" hits the spot and it's worth getting your hands on a copy just for that. The Meath Writers' Circle/ Castle Hotel Trim

About thirteen people turned out for the April meeting of The Meath Writers' Circle last Thursday night with more than a few stories and poems read and some discussion on where to from here or what the next project should be. Nothing decided as yet for the group, though one member is compiling and gathering poems for a launch planned later in September of this year. Congratulations to James Linnane who has a book of poems already on sale and details of this can be found if you click on the link over on the right."Bookchat Corner". The book is titled "The Potless Generation" and sounds just about right for the times we live in. Yet to get my hands on a copy! Also to pick up a copy of  "Boyne Berries 15" and have started to read my way into "Motherlode" by Carolyne Van Der Meer. available from all good bookshops as they say and published by the Wilfred Laurier University Press.
