The Children of the Nation/Second Issue!

The Children of the Nation/Second Issue!

Having sold out on the first issue a second batch is now available and can be obtained through either Connolly Books or Culture Matters.org at a cost of €10 or £9. However orders through Jenny Farrell will continue to be €5 including postage and she will be ready to resume posting again after the 23rd of December. This is no small anthology and would make an ideal Christmas gift in that as she points out in the introduction the "readers will find the poems entertaining as well as thought provoking". The title borrows from the Proclamation of the Republic and is a reminder that we've strayed a long way from those beliefs.

Fr. Peter McVerry/Launched Anthology.

From the Introduction

The Republic guarantees religious and civil liberty, equal rights and equal opportunities to all its citizens, and declares its resolve to pursue the happiness and prosperity of the whole nation and all its parts, cherishing all the children of the nation equally.

Still waiting you might say!

The book includes a foreword by his brother Sean and is dedicated to his family and to the memory of Fr. Camillus Kane C.S.Sp. The book includes both poetry and memories of Trim and Bracklyn in County Westmeath and with words of wisdom and dedications to other family members and friends. Book Launch/Eugene Kane!

"Book Launch/Wow ~ words of wisdom and wonder"

Eugene Kane will be on the Gerry Kelly show on LMFM Radio on Monday the 20th of August at 3 pm to discuss the launch of his new book and provide a little insight or background on what it was that inspired him to take up writing. Originally from Delvin in County Westmeath, his family settled in Trim and he's been a member of The Meath Writers' Circle for a number of years now and is the current vice chairperson of the group. He plays a major role in the production of their Annual Magazine each year and his introduction of a "Young Poets" section proved to be a great success

F R Higgins/Book Launch.

F R Higgins/Book Launch (Father and Son: Selected Poems)
Christopher Gray

For those of you with an hour or two to spare or an interest in the poetry world then Higginsbrook House Trim County Meath is the venue this Sunday for the launch of a selection of poems by F R Higgins. Frederick Robert Higgins was born in Foxford County Mayo in 1896 but spent his summers with his cousins at Higginsbrook and many of his poems are about Meath and the Boyne. This present selection is compiled by Dardis Clarke and Aidan Gray, a cousin of the poet and has an introduction by Joseph Woods of Poetry Ireland. Dardis Clarke was a son of Austin Clarke and I note from The Meath Chronicle that he passed away earlier this year. There is much more information in this week's edition of the paper and if you click on Michael Farry's blog over to the right some interesting material there as well and in more detail. The Scurlogstown Olympiad group and the late Tommy Murray and other members of The Meath Writers' Circle visited the grave each year to lay a wreath and this year's ceremony was performed by Christopher Gray who read the poem "Father and Son". The book will also be launched at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin on Monday and at The Mayfly Hotel, Foxford, County Mayo on Tuesday, If you want to hear a reading of the poem "Father and Son" then none other than Pierce Brosnan can be heard over on youtube.

Book Launch: Meath Junior Writers' Anthology

Book Launch: Meath Junior Writers' Anthology

Tommy Murray at Launch of  Swimming With Dolphins
The launch of The Meath Junior Writers' Anthology will now take place om Thursday 6th of December at 7pm in Navan Library where Michael Farry will do the honours. This is a group of twenty six young writers who used to meet every Saturday morning in the library where Tommy Murray would teach and encourage them to develop their creative writing skills. Many of them went on to win prizes and other awards and the night is sure to be an occasion to mark the contribution Tommy made to writing in the county. This is the fifth collection from the group, or the different classes, over the past thirteen years and hopefully other members will also be there on the night, as well as those of  the different writing groups Tommy was connected with. All welcome.
