An Tobar/Poetry for Pleasure/September 2018!

The guest reader at next Tuesday night's meeting in An Tobar, Ardbraccan Navan is Kevin Dwan. He began writing in 2008 and got involved in the Spoken Word scene and has performed at Longtitude, Valentia Festival and Shakefest etc. Published in a number of journals he is also a music producer and in 2011 produced a Manga-Themed opera called, The Adventures of Captain Mac and the Starship Peace and Unity. His debut collection, Twenty 7 is self published. The latter part of the evening is open mic or "Free Range" and you can contact Jim Owens at 087 967 6728 or An Tobar for further details. John F. Deane was the guest reader on Tuesday night for an evening that was both entertaining and informative. A blending or coming together of both poetry and faith or where one becomes a vehicle of the other and all with some humorous aside; whether that be a greeting or an encounter along the road and I don't know the Irish word for tar nor anything of hide and seek among leaves or song of songs, or much of the many other insights but he also touched on old schoolbook favourites, whether it was the writings of Wordsworth or W. H. Auden reflecting on Yeats. And everything you do in the world. He was the founder of Poetry Ireland and is the recipient of the O' Shaughnessy Award for Irish Poetry and the Marten Toonder Award for Literature and is a member of Aosdána. He was the founder and editor of The Dedalus Press and is the recipient of many international awards. The list goes on. He also reflected on the writings of his friends Thomas Kinsella and Seamus Heaney.

Poetry for Pleasure Group/An Tobar.

The theme for last Tuesday night's meeting was on "Pastimes" which made for an interesting evening with some people reading their own poems or contributions while others went for pieces from writers such as Seamus Heaney, Joyce Kilmer, Bernadette McCarrick and Brendan Kennelly. The poems read included, Blackberry Picking by Seamus Heaney, Pastimes by Willie G. Hodgins, The House With Nobody In It by Joyce Kilmer, Paperchase by Frank Murphy, Bread by Brendan Kennelly, The Joy of Quilting Groups by Leona Rennicks, Can I Sit With This by Marian Murphy, Walking the Land by Bernadette McCarrick, The Small Inconvenience by Willie G. Hodgins, In Honour of Heaney by Marian Murphy and A House In The Fields by Frank Murphy which had nothing to do with "Pastimes" but inspired by Sean Reilly's reading of The House With Nobody In It. Have to look up Mr Kilmer. The theme for next month's meeting is ~ Darkness and Light.

The summer break over, the Poetry for Pleasure group at An Tobar recommenced last night with readings on a poetic theme relating to the season of autumn. Poems read included, Autumn by Willie G. Hodgins, Autumn Leaves by Jacques Prevert/Johnny Mercer, The Deserted Village by Oliver Goldsmith, The Wild Swans of Coole by W.B. Yeats, The Diary of a Church Mouse by John Betjeman, The Lake Isle of Innisfree by W.B. Yeats, The Meteorological Fall and The Astronomical Fall by Carol Owens, The Death of a Field by Paula Meehan, Robin Redbreast by William Alingham, All-Hallows Eve by Francis Ledwidge, September 1913 by W.B. Yeats, An Evening by Francis Ledwidge, Ode to Autumn by John Keats, The Solitary Reaper by William Wordsworth and a prose reading, School Report on the Teacher by George Knightley. The next get-together is on Tuesday the 17th of October and the theme is on something along the same lines.
