Leaves From The Cotton Tree! (SLIP)
As noted by Claire Buckley in the foreword (Irish Ambassador to Sierra Leone) the links between our two countries go back over one hundred and fifty years, starting with Irish missionaries, though this timely publication marks the 30th anniversary of the foundation of the 'Sierra Leone Ireland Partnership'. (SLIP).
A selection of thirty-six essays that reflect on or chronicle the relationships between different religious groups or individuals, both here in Ireland and their overseas counterparts, working in what was often a war-torn country. Most people would be unaware of the conflicts in that part of Africa and their best point of reference is probably the 2006 film 'Blood Diamond' which both captures the beauty of the countryside and the horrors of a war that had its roots in greed and exploitation. The different perspectives here make for an interesting read though the one I remember best is from SR. Hilary Lyons and I'm not just saying that. Jim Owens had a poem dedicated to her in our last magazine and it's included here as well.
The book can be purchased in a number of different outlets including Antonio's of Trim or directly from Jim Owens at 087 967 6728 and check into the link below for further information.
The book with many colour photographs retails at €15.
