Bridie and Con Halton |
A large crowd turned out at the above which was one of a series of events organised to raise funds for the publication of a book of poems by the late Felix Halton of Mullahoran County Cavan. Felix was a gifted traditional poet who committed most of his work to memory and the task of retrieving this from taped recordings and other sources was undertaken by Bridie Halton with the assistance of others in her family and an input from members of The Meath Writers' Circle. A host of performers turned up on the night including Gwen Bagnall, members of the Trim Singers, Matt Murphy of Wexford who kept everyone enthralled with his recitations and songs about hurling and included one by Felix, which he put to music. Also there, was champion Irish fiddler Anton McGowan who performed with Paddy Allen of Dunsany and not forgetting Michael Brady and Michael Hughes of Ballinalee County Longford. Jimmy Gray was on the keyboard and there were other singers and poets, the names I should have taken note of, but.... all in all that's how to put a show on. The book is almost ready to go for publication and a launch date to be announced!
