The book launch for this year's collection of poems and stories took place on last Thursday night in Trim Library and while I've yet to read through, it is a beautiful production with congratulations due to our editor Ria Frost and to the publisher Peter Darby and of course to all who contributed or assisted in any way by submitting their stories or poems. Also a special mention to Clare Kane who has copies for sale at a special price of €10 Euro. This would make a lovely Christmas present for anyone interested in the writing scene in County Meath or those with local connections abroad.

The next meeting of our group takes place on this Thursday night coming at 6.15 pm in Trim Library and all are welcome to attend. Admission is free and whether you're a poet, short story writer or singer -songwriter or interested in writing a novel or you just want to sit in and listen, we'd love to see you there. This is our last meeting before Christmas and maybe some info about our book which includes material from all our members. Sure to be interesting. Exploring the Wit and Wisdom of Oliver Goldsmith!

Oliver Goldsmith. (1728 - 1774}

Oliver Goldsmith was one of Ireland's finest writers and a literary journey through the Irish midlands is hardly complete without visiting his birthplace in County Longford, though there is some argument as to where, with Elphin in County Roscommon being also suggested. A poetry competition and literary festival in his honour is held each year and centers around Pallas where there is a fine statue of him modeled on the one that guards Trinity College in Dublin alongside his compatriot Edmond Burke. There is also one in Ballymahon County Longford and another in Westminster Abbey with an inscription by Samuel Johnson. He was the prompt at the recent 'Poetry for Pleasure' outing in An Tobar, Ardbraccan and it's amazing how many different pieces of information came up. Congratulations to Richard Cahill on the successful launch of his book "Joy's of a Night".

Might be a possible Christmas present for a reflective reader.

The event sparked a suggestion for members of our poetry group.

Maybe a collection of original unpublished poems from members of our group?...?

Meath Autism Network/Book Launch An Tobar!

Richard Cahill launched his second collection of poetry last Monday night (17th) in An Tobar, Ardbraccan with all proceeds going to the Meath Autism Network. Richard was born near the village of Clogheen in South Tipperary before moving to Trim, County Meath. An award winning writer he was twice winner of The Ireland's Own Short Story Award as well as The Maria Edgeworth Short Story Competition and the Molly Keane Memorial Award. Now writing poetry his poems touch on a variety of subjects from the very personal to contemporary issues and always with a sensitivity and observant insight that captures something of the moment and time. Cherry picking if that's even fair enough to use then 'For all the Aislings of this World'.

The life and works of Francis Ledwidge by Liam O' Meara.

Liam O' Meara is Chairman of the Inchicore Ledwidge Society and in the above presentation at Richmond Barracks drawing on his own research he narrates much of the life and works of the poet Francis Ledwidge and captures something of the atmosphere of what was then a small village on the river Boyne and the inspiration for much of the material in his poems. The Francis Ledwidge Awards Presentation Night 2025!

 The  Francis Ledwidge Poetry Competition 2025.

The awards ceremony for this year's competition will take place in McDowell's, Richmond House 139, Emmet Road, Inchicore, Dublin 8 on December 10th at 8 pm and all are welcome to attend. The competition is one of the longest running and more important of its kind as it honours the Meath War poet Francis Ledwidge who died at Ypres, Belgium in 1917. Born in Janeville, Slane he was also friend to many of the poets and writers of the revolutionary period in Ireland and most people will remember him now for his schoolbook poem, Lament for Thomas MacDonagh who was a personal friend. A visit to Slane where his family home is now a museum is close to the grave of his girlfriend Ellie Vaughey and the loss of her to another man is given as one of the reasons he enlisted for the war. From a photograph she was certainly a beautiful girl. Congratulation to Margaret Galvin on winning this year's competition and a full list of those who were placed or commended can be found on the Inchicore Ledwidge Facebook page.

Ron Carey was the guest poet and reader at the Swift Cultural Centre in Trim, County Meath last night and there are a number of his videos on Youtube with details of his career and background on his own website. An award winning writer he was shortlisted Forward Prize for the Best First Collection in 2016 and both winner, Highly Commended, Commended and placed in others. The importance of Youtube as a video sharing platform cannot be overestimated. This rendition of the lead track from the Nebraska album is one of a number out there and if you're watching this one I suggest that a visit to Youtube for the comment section is a must and/or for any other insights into the background or influences that went towards its creation and how it affected people. * Richard Cahill who is a member of our group will be launching his book of poetry 'JOY'S OF A NIGHT' in An Tobar Ardbraccan, Navan on Monday the 17th of November at 7pm and again all are welcome to attend.  An award winning writer from Clogheen in South County Tipperary he now lives in Trim and this is his second book of poetry. Published in hardback by Lettertec the book includes tributes from some of Ireland's finest writers and contains poems on a variety of themes that reflect on a world that is not always kind but sometimes redeems itself in little things. A series of observations on a life that surrounds and makes for some fine reading.

At the last meeting of the 'Poetry For Pleasure' group I suggested something of Bruce Springsteen and the above is the trailer from the making of the album 'Nebraska'. Now I haven't seen the film yet and am not familiar with the content but I can remember where I was and what I was doing when I first heard one of its tracks. It was a long time ago but there is something of a magic with much of the material he has created over the years. There is so much material about Tara on the internet that its hard to know where to start. Here Sean Boylan who managed Meath for a time when they were more that a force to be reckoned with chats for a bit about the famous hill. Given its historic and cultural value and the fact that it attracts visitors in countless numbers from all over the world every year you'd imagine the government would do much more to protect it but it would seem their interests are in other places. 'The Harp That Once Through Tara's Halls' read by John Waters.

The above song/poem was written by Thomas Moore (1779 - 1852) whose career and life was so extraordinary that a year would not be long enough to describe it. John Waters who is one of Ireland's leading journalists and commentators and one of the few not afraid to express his opinions on the present state of affairs, here recites a fine version of the song. A reminder that our poetry session is on this Tuesday 30th September at 7.30pm. 

We are going with the guiding theme of "Anything Goes"

In other words a poem of your choice. It can be one written by yourself.  

Or it can be a poem that speaks to you as the Autumn creeps in on us.

I can't resist quoting yet again from John Keats' memorable poem To Autumn

Tom Dredge was the guest reader at the Swift Sessions on Thursday night where he read excerpts from his recently published book 'Rambling Along the Royal Canal'. Available from The Liffey Press and I've yet to get a copy of. I remarked that it is full of endless conversation pieces and it is easily one of the finest productions I've seen with illustrations in colour throughout. The photo above is of me trying to sing a ballad called ' The News' which is self explanatory at best and the photo above does justice to the ballad. Tom remarked that it is to the air of 'Follow Me Up to Carlow' and that reminded me of the rhyming pattern of P. J. McCall's song which has the first three lines rhymed but not the fourth then the next three lines rhymed and the eight line rhymes with the fourth. Look I'll have to work on that. Don't forget to look up Tom's book.

George Jones - Wild Irish Rose!

George Jones ~ Wild Irish Rose.

George Jones is rated by many as the greatest American country singer of them all and his vocal techniques are a study all on their own. The above song though was written by Bobby Braddock who came to Nashville to play piano for the late great Marty Robbins and the song is intended as a tribute for those who fought in the Vietnam war and in many cases were forgotten about when they returned. Some of the great writers of anti-war songs include artists such as Bob Dylan, Steve Earle, Billy Joel, Buffy Sainte-Marie and I'm sure you could add a few yourself. Irish artists who have covered George Jones songs include Mick Flavin and Matt Leavy and if you're reading this in some far foreign place on a check out you'll be amazed at how good they are. Alvy Carragher ~ "Socrates Likes to talk philosophy at the taverna".

I came across Alvy Carragher in an interview on 'Second Captains' on Saturday the 30th August on RTE Radio. Goes out about 1pm. Presented by Eoin McDevitt and Ciarán Murphy it is a competition of sorts to find the greatest non sports person sports person and she was the guest. Always very interesting with any number of insights depending on who; this one was special because she was a sports person of some accomplishment being a former national champion. The guest the week before was none other than Michael D so she had some competition. Much more information about her if you go to Youtube or visit her own website given below. A winner of the Eavan Boland Poetry Award 2025 and an Irish Track and Field champion not to mention Louisiana she went down to 87 points. I could almost hear the ghost of the famous boxing coach Joe Jacobs on the microphone.

Another famous artist from Northern Ireland; this video was loaded by Belfast Van and George to celebrate Van Morrison's 80th birthday on the 31st of August 2025 and it's a must see. Edited and directed by Peter Lydon and Tom Tyrwhitt it was created in 1990 and some of Ireland's best known poets are here. A day or two late here but something by Seamus Heaney who needs no introduction whatsoever. Met him once on Tara when the protests about the M3 motorway were taking place and there was some collection of Irish literary figures and historians there that day. The road went through anyway and the media went back to admiring itself. The poem above is a reflection on the 'troubles' and very well written. Colum Sands of the Sands family has a song of the same title and well worth a listen and I borrowed the title for a poem of my own but I'd go for the aforementioned. Recorded by Paddy Smith of the Boyne Writers Group to mark All Ireland Poetry Day in 2013, Auction by F. R. Higgins is easily one of the finest poems ever to come out of this county. Recited here by Christopher Gray and with the last verse by Michael Farry it was originally posted on this site back in 2014. I came across it again a few days ago and said why not. This poem will hang there with Yeats or Kavanagh no trouble. There are many anthologies of Irish poetry out there but I've yet to come across one where it is included. Perhaps I don't read enough of them. If you should come across our magazine from 2018, there it is.

F. R. Higgins was born in Foxford Co. Mayo spending summers in Meath at his beloved Higginsbrook.

He is buried in the churchyard at Laracor, Trim Co. Meath. Once the parish church of Jonathan Swift.

Sport as they say is poetry in motion and after a week that served us up a classic in the All Ireland Final, give a listen to the above. The 2 Johnnies and Kingfishr get together to tell a story that has something of every parish in Ireland. Anyone who watched the camogie final at the weekend can only but be impressed by the ferocity and passion they brought to the game and what can you say. I'm no analyst but 'push-ups' and 'turn-overs' and 'possessions' does not do it justice. Borrowing from Mattie Ross that was some bully shot at the end and while referees and officials can't see everything there are issues that need to be addressed and the captains of each team should have the option in such cases to refer them to a video call. A short film by S H Bean and loaded by UCC Ireland where the poet takes on the persona of Maurice Devane to recount his experiences in a mental hospital in Dublin and it is worth a little of your time to do some research on this, either via Youtube or Wikipedia or whatever source you find most suitable. I first came across Austin Clarke a long time ago from a recording by Liam Clancy 'The Planter's Daughter' and it's a piece of magic. He changes it some but there was nobody better than Liam to recite poetry. Locking people up in mental institutions and the awful outcomes of the practice was something of the norm back them and there are a number of books on the subject though the only one I've read was by Ken Kesey and sure you're all familiar with that. The Secret Scripture by Sebastian Barry is another and there is one much closer to home. Anyway, time to sign off - it's Sunday morning. With thanks to UCC and S H Bean.

An Tobar/ Poetry for Pleasure July 2025!

Greetings Poetry Lovers.

It is almost five weeks since our last poetry session.

We meet on this Tuesday evening, 29th July at 7.30 pm. 

Our guiding Theme is that prolific poet Paul Durcan who died in May of this year aged 80 years.

He was born in Dublin and buried in 

Aughavale cemetery near Wesport in the shadow of Croagh Patrick, Co Mayo.

But let me emphasise that you are welcome to share any poem of your choice.

We take a break in August and resume our poetry sessions on Tuesday 30th September.

Carol Owens has kindly agreed to facilitate our meeting on Tuesday evening.
